2. The Oscar statuette weighs 8.5 pounds, sculpted by American sculptor George Stanley, designed by Cedric Gibbons, Chief Art Director at MGM and stands 13.5 inches tall. Its official name was “Academy Award of Merit” and adopted the “Oscar” nickname in 1939. The statuette is plated 24k gold and made of solid bronze. Rumor has it, named Oscar because it resembled then Academy librarian, Margaret Herrick’s Uncle Oscar.
